Calories matter. A lot. Whether it’s chicken and broccoli or a cheeseburger, you’re not going to lose weight if you’re not in a caloric deficit. Now, it’s very tough to eat too many calories of broccoli… and much easier to eat too many calories of cheeseburgers. But ultimately, weight loss comes down to creating a caloric deficit.
Which brings us to the flip side - exercise. You can’t outwork a bad diet by simply relying on your hour in the gym. There are 23 other hours in the day, during which you can either burn or add calories. Which means doing cardio is definitely not enough. So what do you do?
Plenty of research (and anecdotal evidence) confirms that greater lean muscle mass accelerates metabolism. That’s because it actively burns more energy than fat tissue, simply by existing.
Therefore, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest, evening out the “calories in vs. calories out” equation.
Does that mean strength training will make you too bulky? Absolutely not. That’s just a (unfortunately common) myth. It’s misinformation like this that keeps the “Big Box” commercial gyms in business. If you believe these myths, you won’t get results, and you’ll have to keep spending money on the next fad.
Other common myths about strength training include:
● It’s unsafe and will injure you, or machines are safer
● You have to use light weight and high reps, or adding a ton of weight is the only way to get stronger
● It’s only for men (this goes along with the bulky myth)
● It’s either some crazy intense CrossFit workout, or sitting on boring machines
Look, strength training isn’t always that stuff you see on Facebook or the news. With the right coaching, it can be the key to unlocking your weight loss, regaining functional strength, or living a healthier lifestyle.
It doesn’t take much, but it has to be the right quality. Get an expert to assess you and help find the real problem first. We address and assess strength, mobility, and flexibility to find the right fit for you.
Once you’ve identified that, it’s just a matter of training the major movements a few times per week, and then moving on with it!
