I am not going to become the most popular person in the fitness industry by telling the truth. It's not my goal. My goal Is to have an impact on people that need fitness the most! I take pride in giving you hope to keep chasing your fitness goals, after you failed 300 other programs. Or maybe they failed you?!
The fitness industry has some issues to solve. Todays
article is not one I could have written back in 2001 when I picked up my first trainer certification. Since then I have seen fads come and go. Below are a few ways the fitness industry might have failed you, and some tips on turning fitness into a lifestyle change!

It's start with the relationship between the fitness facility and you!
Intensity Sweet Spot=> We pride ourselves on finding the intensity sweet spot. Going to a big box gym and doing the typical treadmill and machine weights workout is not doing much. It is also boring and hard to follow long term. On the other end of the spectrum are places that are trying to kill you on session one! They just end up injuring people and frustrating
them.
We turned the group class into group personal training with our level system and red light/green light system. We are able to put you in a position to be successful LONG TERM! Start slower than you think you have to! Build a foundation around good technique and solid habits that last a lifetime!
Unrealistic Goals => We have members down over 100lbs, over 70, over 30 and the list goes on! But these members put in work over time. They
had to fight through phases where the goal was to not go backwards just like you ! The difference is they did not sit around and do nothing or wait until "the perfect time." They took baby steps every single day! We help you set realistic goals and hold you accountable with our coaching outside of the training!
Part 2-Rant for the week=> Muscle loss is not the same as fat loss!!! Losing water weight is not the same as fat loss either!! I
see so many people following crazy low calorie/carb diet and working out hard 7 days a week to get no where! Fast!! and then think they actually got somewhere!! ...so they keep going and then run themselves into the ground even more! In most cases literally running themselves into the ground, with no strength training to help hold on to muscle!
I am not attacking running. But go do it without an activity (strength training!!) that will help prevent injuries and.........you end
up starting and stopping over and over again because of injury! I get it!......you run because its gets you out in nature, endorphins, and you (think) know how to do it safely.
Respect the runners people!.....its a sport. A skill you have to go out and learn..... so that you can be good at running!! But don't equate being good at running with fat loss(maybe muscle loss?)!! You can probably equate someone who is lighter in the first place at having an advantage at
running. That person then puts more hours into this skill and gets even better!! You can probably even equate someone starting any fitness program and then making better choices outside of the exercise. That can lead to fat loss!
The quickest way to ruin your metabolism and speed up the aging process is to lose muscle!! The is also the quickest way to lose 10lbs and then put it right back on again!! And most fad programs are setting you up for this!! Have some
patience and do it right people!! Get some guidance from a professional! Stop losing the weight just to look worse! The scale is not going to paint the entire picture!
You must do strength training!!!! I get it. With strength training you fear you will look weird, not fit in with your gym, get bored with machines, or any other reason. Sadly at most gyms you probably will. Most offer no guidance with strength training and create a bad atmosphere where you don't feel
comfortable.
You end up programming strength training in a way where you don't end up getting the cardiovascular benefit from it. You end up programming strength training in a way where you have to be at the gym forever to get any benefit! . You know the people who do a set of an exercise and then wait 3 minutes before they do anything else? or sit around and wait for the machine they want to use to open up!!
If running equals cardio, and cardio equals quicker
fat loss, then I would have created a center with a bunch of treadmills lined up next to each other and have people run all day!! oh, the commercial gyms did that already and it got people....... no where! For decades!! And now we have places selling running on a treadmill with a piece of technology as groundbreaking!!! And then charging you an arm and a leg to.......run on a treadmill!! Nothing is groundbreaking in 2018 people!! If you think running on a treadmill (with a heart rate
monitor) is the key to being able to sit around for 23 hours while burning so many calories you eat whatever you want and lose weight then ===>
The person you listened to is a better salesperson than trainer!
I have been in this industry for about 18 years now so I know better. I can see how you would get fooled though. I know better and I still want to believe it! And all these other people are doing it!! I mean the person who
said it had abs and OMG they are charming!! That must mean they are an amazing coach, trainer, and leader also?! ......yeah, ok! Most of them have not been in this industry long enough to know that what they are selling is a scam, a fad, and hurts more people than it helps!!!! Anyone can tell someone to eat 1000 calories and work out every day. And then tell them it's their fault because they did not "follow the plan.".....It takes a true fitness professional to help someone make a LIFESTYLE
CHANGE!!!!
One more thing for those people who don't know anything about us yet.... You hear group class and you are thinking about all of these copycat fad gyms with 30 to 40 people working out. You know the ones where they are all doing the exercises wrong? And they are all doing the same exact thing regardless of their starting point?! Group Personal Training and Group class are not even in the same category!
The people who need their
life changed need.......
*Accountability
*coaching the other 23 hours of the day outside of exercise
*individual coaching (this can happen in the group setting!!)
*education
