Slow Strength?!/NEW Small Group Times

Published: Sun, 08/06/17

Even though we do personal training and sports performance training we are known for our "boot camp." As we get ready to introduce our new small group times on August 22nd, I wanted to take some time to explain what I call "slow strength." We implement this method in our personal training sessions with success, and it will be the focus of our small group times. It works great as a stand alone, or the perfect complement to our boot camp sessions.

First, A quick overview of our "boot camp" for those who are not members. The "boot camp" is just a name. I told you last week don't get caught up in a name so lets just call it "quality training for busy people." For those who are not members the terms metabolic conditioning (met-con), HIIT, and circuit training will give you an idea. It is NOT Crossfit, at all! It is not your traditional group class! We use tools like TRX, battle ropes, sleds, your bodyweight, kettlebells, landmine trainers, lebert trainers, med balls, val slides, and much more to give you a great workout!

In all of our sessions we address...

*Soft tissue quality with foam rolling (think massage)
*Dynamic or Movement Flexibility
*Balance
*Corrective Exercise sometimes called "functional"
*Mobility
*Strength Training
*Cardiovascular Health
*Static Flexibility...the traditional flexibility work that all of you know about already

In future articles I am going to go in to more detail about soft tissue quality, movement flexibility, mobility, and how cardio is not just running around on a treadmill. I realize a lot of people don't understand these terms. I hate to see people get scammed by programs throwing around terms that cause more confusion or overhype a method or tool.

So what is the difference between "slow strength" and the way we address strength training in our boot camps? Slow strength is not the fad that went through years back where you lift extremely slow. I am not telling you to speed through your reps but there is no benefit to going extremely slow. Slow strength is just a term (I probably made up) that gets the point across to those who have only done our boot camps, or other things that are similar.

The major differences are ....

***The strength gains come faster because we are manipulating the rep scheme vs doing it for time. --- Even though the majority of time will be spent in the 8 to 12 range, I change this up by the week. I have some weeks, for some people, that I might even use 5 reps to get your nervous system primed for a weight you have been trying to lift for years!

***The tracking of numbers is a major difference, and motivator! ---When you come in you know what weight you are going to beat from the previous week!

***Exercise Selection! --- We are able to do a few more things in our smaller group times! More variety while also being able to hammer away and make progress on the basics!

***The rest periods are longer, but We still use supersets--- By manipulating the rest periods, along with rep scheme, we reduce fatigue within the session which allows us to push a bit longer with higher quality sets/more weight. I love alternating between 2 exercises (supersets) because we get a lot of work done in a short amount of time. This also keeps your heart rate up so you can get a cardiovascular benefit.

***Smaller groups, so of course more individualized attention! --- The members who have already signed up have a variety of different goals and we can address them all in groups of 5 to 6 people. It is also perfect for those who might need to use it more for therapy, to get back in to the swing of things, or to just test your strength numbers!

*** Faster Results! --- Just like our boot camps you still get access to our "other 23 hours" program. The main reason our programs work is because we include accountability, nutrition, assessments, consultations, injury prevention programs, education, level system for complete beginners, and much more!
