I changed this when I hit 40!
I remember being in my twenties, laughing at the “Masters” division strength standards. No way I will fall off that much if I continue to be consistent with my routine. Boy, was I wrong. Life changes, joints change, hormones change, everything.
Below are a few things that I had to change in my program over the years…..
More mobility and flexibility training - This has been the biggest change! I need to do a lot more mobility and flexibility training. A lot more! I can’t just do a few exercises in the warm up and cool down anymore. Sessions that are focused on mobility, flexibility, and soft issue work are a must!
We include mobility and flexibility work in all of our sessions. We even have some people who have us program 1 on 1 mobility and flexibility sessions for them. Improving flexibility and mobility is a game changer!
Joint friendly strength training- As a trainer, my technique has been good. But even with perfect technique, some exercises are not a good
fit for me anymore. My joints hurt just looking at a barbell now. With the exception of the landmine and special bars, I am not doing barbell work anymore. I have a million options that work better for me and my current goals.
Low impact cardio - The overall theme of today’s newsletter is avoid getting injured! It’s impossible to be consistent if you are always hurt. For cardio, you have to find what
works best for you. We are all built differently. There are not too many people who can run a lot of miles without getting injured.
Goal setting and mindset - Your goals and mindset will have to change over time. You are not the same person as you age. This is okay! Prioritize your health and hire a personal trainer to get you back on track if you have fallen off.
Improve recovery - Recovery is always important. As you get older , you will have to work a bit harder to have your body ready for the next session. Plenty of sleep, solid nutrition, and getting help with programming for your body type helps.
