Today I want to spend a little time discussing some of the most overused words in fitness.
The first one is momentum. I believe sports are to blame for the misnomer about momentum. You know how the commentators talk about “momentum” carrying over from one game to the next. There is no such thing? Each game is decided on its own merits, regardless of what
happened in the previous game.
It’s the same thing when it comes to fitness.
Does Momentum have to do with results? Not Really. Only actions determine results.
One action, taken today, will give you that momentum you are looking for!
Whenever I hear people talk about waiting for the perfect time, it makes me want to scream! If you go from nothing to one workout next week, I am proud of you. One Day at a
time.
Do the things you need to do today in order to move closer to your goal … and … you will move closer to
your goal.
It’s really that simple.
The second most overused term that comes to mind is willpower.
When we fall out of our workout routine or get off track with our diet, it’s natural to beat ourselves up and blame ourselves for not having enough “willpower.”
Most of the time, it has nothing to do with the power of our will.
Usually, it’s the lack of a plan.
If we’re just trying to wing it, good luck achieving the results that you want.
Whether it’s a well-designed, intentional training program or a realistic diet with mostly healthy choices, having a plan is the key to getting results.
Finally, there’s another word that gets overused when it comes to our health and fitness.
Discipline.
Again, accusing ourselves of lacking discipline when we fall off track with our fitness is another way of shaming and blaming ourselves.
But most of the time, it wasn’t a lack of discipline that caused the disappointing result.
It was the lack of a professional, caring coach showing us how to “do the things,” supporting us along the way, and holding us accountable.
No amount of discipline in the world can overcome a lack of support … whether it’s from our coach, friends, family members, or all of the above.
So if you feel like you’ve lost your “momentum,” or lacked the “discipline” or “willpower” to stay on track, think again. Be nicer to yourself, and recognize that it’s actually a lot simpler than that. Do not hesitate
to ask for help!
