I can hear you now. “Detric, Your golf experience has nothing to do with me losing a few pounds and getting in shape!” But you
are wrong.
No, I am not going to praise golf as the “secret” to improving your fitness level. I plan to share a few things from my experience that will help you reach your fitness goals.
Results don’t happen overnight! - These last few months have been fun, but humbling to say the least. It has been a
slow process and frustrating at times.
Do not expect overnight results when it comes to your fitness journey. You will get frustrated at times. If you are just getting started, give yourself some time to figure it out. Have a positive attitude and learn from your
mistakes.
Individual variations for technique! - Watch high level golfers and you will see that
they are all different. Different grips, stances, etc. There are some fundamental things they all do the same, but for the most part every swing is different.
The same thing happens in the gym. Watch 10 people squat and it will look different. This is the way it should be! Of course there are some fundamental things like keeping
feet flat, neutral spine, breathing patterns, etc. But things like distance between feet, angle of feet, and variations will vary from person to person.
Any fitness “expert” who says there is only one way to do something is usually wrong. We always have variations that will fit your body type, goals, and previous
injuries.
Consistent hard work! I hope this is obvious, but I have to talk about it. Hard work does not
work, if it is not consistent. Being consistent is always the most important thing.
Coaching speeds up progress! The best investment I made was hiring a coach. It gave me the confidence to get out and practice a lot more. He was able to help me develop a practice plan. Speed up the learning process and keep me away from bad habits.
With your fitness journey, view your coach as an investment. It will save you a
ton of time and even money in the long run. Will prevent you from getting injured all the time. Will keep things fun and interesting. We all need accountability.
