If I Lift Weights Will I Get Bulky?
One of the most common strength training myths states the following; if women start lifting weights, they will become bulky. However, this is simply nothing more than a myth, and for multiple reasons.
Women will not become bulky if they start lifting weights, and the number one reason is that their bodies cannot carry as much muscle mass without the higher testosterone levels that men have . So there's no need to worry that you'll end up like the local bodybuilder at your gym. Even men will not bulk up unless they are putting in serious hours in the gym, while
eating tons of food!
The word bulky is often used as a synonym for women who have well-defined physiques and larger muscles than the average woman. In most cases they are referring to higher level bodybuilders. Some of which are taking substances to increase testosterone.
Now we will list some of the main reasons why women will not get bulky from weight lifting and the positive health benefits that go along with it.
Not Enough Testosterone
Women won't bulk up in the gym as fast or as hard as men because they don't have as much testosterone in their bodies. Testosterone is one of the most critical factors in determining muscle growth capacity. Even the women who have slightly higher than average testosterone levels, do not have enough to build what we would
define as bulky muscles.
Building Muscle Mass Is No Easy Task
If you think you will just walk into the gym and start building muscle
or bulking up without years of experience, you have another thing coming. The bulky and muscular physiques we often see in the gym, whether male or female, have taken years to build.
This proves that women who begin to weight lift will not get bulky, as even if they wanted to, it could take up to a decade of consistent training to get a physique that you can determine as bulky.
Don't Eat Enough Calories
If you want to bulk up, the equation is simple, eat more calories than you burn on a regular basis. You have to be trying very hard to put on a lot of muscle. It will not happen just from lifting weights.
Why Should Women Lift Weights?
Now that we've gone over some of the main reasons why you don't need to worry about bulking up if you're a woman who wants to start weight training, here's a list of some of the benefits of lifting weights as a woman.
- It can benefit your mental health and reduce your risk of being diagnosed
with multiple chronic illnesses.
- It can give you a feeling of strength, empowerment, and confidence.
- If you want to slim down, it's a great way to exercise and aid in weight loss.
- It can improve your overall bone density, prevent osteoporosis and help you maintain a healthy lifestyle even into your later years.
- It can help you maintain a good level of flexibility and mobility.
Should I lift lighter with higher reps? With bands only?
NO! NO! And NO!!!!!!
You have to push yourself to get stronger! Of course you have to master bodyweight exercises first. You need to take your time to build a foundation. If you are sticking
to the lightest weights possible and doing 100 reps with them, you will not see any benefit from strength training!
