In the hustle and bustle of the season, you might be tempted to skip the gym.
Don’t lose momentum just because of the holidays! Consistency is key to building and maintaining healthy habits. Try these tips to set
yourself up for success when you’re slammed for time:
Swap your regular workout for high-intensity interval
training (HIIT) or circuit training. If you’re too stressed to get in a long lift session, compromise by shortening your time.
Focus on frequency. You’re more likely to maintain your momentum by working out three times a week for 30 minutes, rather than once a week for 1.5 hours. When you have more time, it’ll be easy to ramp those 30 minutes back up to an hour.
Break a sweat at home! If you’re traveling or just don’t have time for the gym, plan a simple workout that doesn’t require a lot of space or equipment that you can do anywhere.
Get outside. Hiking and walking are great ways to keep moving; you can even make it a family activity!
Plan ahead! If you’re traveling, look up gyms ahead of time, or check if your hotel has a fitness center. Bring resistance bands with you, or ask family members if they have any exercise
equipment you can use. If you’re prepared in advance, it’ll be easier to get started when it’s time to exercise.
Schedule your workouts in advance. Your goals deserve to be prioritized, so treat exercise with the importance you’d assign a doctor’s appointment. Find a way to work it into your calendar instead of leaving it as an afterthought.
This time of year may require some compromises, but remember- fitness is a lifestyle! Try seeing the December rush as an awesome challenge. You’ll learn to practice being creative and flexible with your workouts while staying on track.
