Stop Being So Hard On
Yourself
It’s easy to be angry at yourself
for failing to reach your goals, but have you stopped to ask yourself why?
Imagine it was a friend of yours
that fell off the wagon. Would you berate them with the same thoughts that you have about yourself when you fail? Of course not!
Forgive yourself. You will win
nothing from self-abuse.
Figure Out What Went
Wrong
Look at what you did, what you
expected, and what the results were. Somewhere along the way, you’ll spot what went wrong.
Maybe you weren’t very clear with
your goals. This makes it easy to lose focus and motivation.
Or maybe you tried to do everything
at once. As tempting as it is to speed up your progress as much as humanly possible, you will just end up falling off the wagon because you’re overwhelmed.
Change How You Do
It
You’ve already figured out that
something has gone wrong, and you’ve also hopefully figured out what it is. It’s time to change it.
This might look like changing the
actual exercises that make up your regime. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you’re probably not going to get very far.
You might also only change little
variables. If you set aside more time than you could reasonably dedicate, for example, try lowering this to something you can and will commit to. The alternative is an unachievable goal that will only leave you demotivated.
Get Back In The
Saddle
You tried. You failed. Does this
mean that you can never succeed? Of course not. Failure is normal, an unavoidable part of life. You can’t avoid it, so why let yourself be demoralized by it? Your best lessons will come from failure. Learn from it and move on.
The fact that you experienced a
blip on your journey is no indication of your unsuitability to continue. If you want to succeed, it’s a simple matter of trying again. You might fail again, but if you do, that’s OK, because you can keep on trying until you finally make it, and that victory will be so sweet.
Give Yourself A
Leg-Up
Make it easier for yourself this
time around. This might mean treating it like a game to keep it fun, taking a more proactive approach to keep focused, or getting together with some friends to not feel so alone through the process. Think outside the box and remember that no one’s keeping score. You’re doing this for you.
