☑️Why You Hit a Plateau and How to Overcome It
A fitness plateau is an indication that your body is
no longer being challenged by your current exercise regime. Overcoming a plateau requires a change in routine, an increased intensity, or a change to your diet and rest habits.
What is a Workout
Plateau?
You’ve been working out for a while now but you’re not
seeing the changes that you did before. Maybe you aren’t losing weight as quickly as you used to. Or you don’t seem to be building muscle like you did when you first started.
A workout plateau is when you are no longer making
progress toward your fitness goals. This can include things like not losing weight, not gaining strength, or not improving endurance.
Why Do Workout Plateaus
Happen?
Reaching a fitness plateau can be very discouraging.
After all, you’re still putting in the same time and dedication–why aren’t you seeing progress anymore? While it may seem contradictory, hitting a workout plateau is actually a sign of progress.
A fitness plateau is an indication that your body has
adjusted to the physical demands that you have been placing on it. These activities, whether they are weight-lifting, aerobics, or yoga, no longer require the same amount of effort that they used to.
Hitting a plateau in your exercise routine simply means
that your body now requires something different if you wish to increase your progress.
How Do I Overcome a Workout
Plateau?
If you have reached a plateau, there are steps you can
take to give your body a boost and get back to seeing progress.
One way to overcome a fitness plateau is to change your
routine. Your body adjusts to activities that it does regularly and these exercises will not be as challenging as they once were.
For example, let’s say you typically focus your time on
running. Over time, your body gets better and better at that activity. If you’ve hit a plateau, try a new exercise such as swimming or cycling.
Another way to get over a plateau is to increase the
intensity of your workout. If you are used to lifting 30-pound weights, bump this up to 40 pounds. If you usually cycle 5 miles a day, try doing 7 miles. Adding time, weight, or speed to your exercise routine can help get you over the hump.
Overcoming a plateau can often mean changing your food
intake as well. Perhaps you are not seeing muscle growth because you are not consuming enough protein. Maybe you don’t have the caloric intake necessary to sustain a long run or hike. Having the proper nutrition to fuel your workout will ensure that you get the most out of every exercise.
Lastly, you need to get enough rest. This includes taking
days off from your regular exercise routine, either to rest completely or to do a lighter version of your workout. It also includes getting enough sleep so that your body can properly recover.
